Dr Hassina Mouri is holding a senior lecturer position in the department of geology at the University of Johannesburg since August 2008. Hassina a South African citizen was born in a splendid mountainous region near Bejaia city, Algeria. After she completed her primary school, she relocated to Algiers to complete her college and high-school education. Already at that time, Hassina developed a passion for the natural sciences and was always curious about the rocky-mountains at her hometown. Hassina graduated from the University of Houari Boumedienne, Algiers (Cum Laude) in June 1990. As an Outstanding Student of the Year in Geology, she was awarded a Franco-Algerian Fellowship to continue her postgraduate studies in France (University Paris 7 and Museum National d?Histoire Naturelle de Paris). Her research interests were on Thermodynamic application to the study of some rare rocks from the Archaean Hoggar Shield in Algeria, which were subjected to extremely high grade metamorphic conditions. She completed her Master in June 1991, then a PhD (Cum Laude) in January 1995. In April 1995, Dr Mouri joined the University of Helsinki then the Geological Survey of Finland as a research associate. In June 1999, she was awarded a 2 years NSF-USA Research Grant at the University of Minnesota (USA). However, in October 2000, she decided to come back to Africa to take a tenured senior lectureship in the Department of Geology at the University of Pretoria as the only female academic staff member of the department. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Mouri has gained extensive experience in research in various geological environments (Archaean Hoggar Shield in Algeria, Svecofennian Belt in Finland, Eastern Ghat Belt in India, British Columbia in Canada, the Limpopo and Namaqualand metamorphic Belts in South Africa) and Earth Science Education in numerous countries (Algeria, France, Finland, USA, South Africa). Her research work focuses on the Archaean crustal evolution (3.8 to 2.5 billion years ago) using specialised techniques and multidiscipline approach (essentially mineralogy, petrology, radiogenic isotope geology). In particular, Dr. Mouri is interested in understanding ?Ultra-high temperature metamorphic rocks and related radioactive anomalies?. These rare rocks, record some unexplained events such as parts of the Earth?s crust that reached temperatures close to and even excess 1000?C. These rocks may preserve in their textures and mineral composition ?snapshots? of the Earth?s past geological history, which may lead to better understanding of how mountain belts were formed and how the Earth?s crust was evolved during early times. Most of the results of Dr. Mouri?s work have been published in international journals and presented at international conferences. She has served as chairperson, committee member and session convener as well as guest speaker at many international workshops and conferences. Dr Mouri was elected Secretary General of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) during the 22nd Colloquium of African Geology, held in Tunisia on the 6th of November 2008. She is currently leading the organisation of the International event on African geology (23rd Colloquium of African Geology) ? the first African female geologist to achieve these distinctions. She has received a number of international recognitions including The Best Presentation of an IGCP meeting in Australia in 1993; a Visiting Research Grant at the University of Pavia - Italy 2007 and was invited in February 2008 as studio guest for the ?Women in Science? television program of the South African National Broadcaster (SABC). Dr Mouri has proven that, although geological science is a ?male-dominated professional field?, female scientists can perform as well and make great contributions in this field. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The new body ? which will receive a large boost in funding and become operational in January ? merges four UN agencies and offices: the UN Development Fund for Women (<"http://www.unifem.org/">UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women (<"http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/">DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (<"http://www.unfoundation.org/donate/instraw.html">UN-INSTRAW). ?UN Women will promote the interests of women and girls across the globe,? Mr. Ban told reporters in announcing the appointment. ?Ms. Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN agencies and many partners in both the public and private sector.? ?I?m confident that under her strong leadership we can improve the lives of millions of women and girls throughout the world.? Ms. Bachelet, Chile?s first female president who prioritized women?s issues throughout her tenure and since leaving office has been working with UNIFEM to advocate for the needs of Haitian women following January?s devastating earthquake, was chosen over two other candidates. The new entity is set to have an annual budget of at least $500 million, double the current combined resources of the four agencies it comprises. ?As you know the creation of UN Women is the culmination of almost four years? effort and today?s announcement has been made possible thanks to the hard work of the Member States and the many partners who share our commitment to this agenda, and this has been a top and very personal priority of mine,? Mr. Ban said. He stressed that at next week?s UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (<"http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/">MDGs) women and children will be ?at the very core of our final push? to realize the ambitious targets for slashing extreme poverty and hunger, maternal and infant mortality, rampant diseases, and lack of access to education and health services, all by the deadline of 2015. ?We have a little more than three and a half months,? Mr. Ban said. ?I will discuss this Sunday, when I appoint her formally, how we can make the process very speedy, so that we can appoint and recruit staff and we have to have our agendas. Basically we have all these structures in place. Now it is a matter of how we can speedily implement these structures and policy and visions.? ?I ask all the Member States and civil community leaders, and governments, and business communities, to render their full support and cooperation.? Today?s announcement follows a unanimous General Assembly vote on 2 July to create a dynamic new entity merging the four offices focusing on gender equality. One of its main goals will be to support the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and other inter-governmental bodies in devising policies. It will also aim to help Member States implement standards, provide technical and financial support to countries which request it, and forge partnerships with civil society. Within the UN, it will hold the world body accountable for its own commitments on gender equality. ________________ For more details go to UN News Centre at http://www.un.org/news To change your profile or unsubscribe go to: http://www.un.org/apps/news/email/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In order to contribute to a fuller understanding of the issue and to assist the Commission in its deliberations, the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW, now part of UN Women ) in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will convene an expert group meeting (EGM) on ?Gender, science and technology? from 28 September to 1 October 2010 in Paris, France. The EGM will explore the gender dimensions of science and technology, and identify policies and programmes that can accelerate progress towards the internationally agreed development goals, including the MDGs. It will examine strategies for: ? Increasing women?s access to and use of technology, including more gender-responsive products ?
