The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is
looking for a Researcher to be responsible for developing research
for advocacy on gender, adaptation and compliance on adaptation
commitments. Educated to postgraduate level. S/he will have a proven
ability to conduct policy-orientated research on environment and

Institute of Development Studies, Univ of Sussex
Fellow in Agriculture, Science and Policy (Ref: 317)
£40,853 to £55,000 per annum, subject to experience

The Knowledge, Technology and Society (KNOTS) Team of IDS is seeking to
appoint up to two new Research Fellows as part of an expanding
programme of research on African agriculture and development, with a
particular focus on the governance of science, technology and innovation
and the politics of policy processes. The post will combine research
with teaching and policy support. In association with the Future
Agricultures
Consortium (www.future-agricultures.org <http://www.future-agricultures.org 
 >) and the STEPS Centre
(www.steps-centre.org <http://www.steps-centre.org>), and together  
with partners in Africa and the EU,
the new Research Fellow(s) will develop work in Africa among the
following themes:
• Agricultural innovation systems
• Participatory approaches to agricultural research and development
• The governance and regulation of new agricultural technologies
• The politics of policy processes surrounding technology development in
agriculture
• Agroecology and ecosystem services
• Agriculture-water-health interactions
• Agriculture, land, livelihoods and the dynamics of environmental,
socioeconomic and technological change
Applicants will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) with a strong
research and publications record focusing on the social and political
dimensions of agricultural change, including extended field  
experience. Experience of
coordinating diverse collaborative research teams and raising research  
funds
from different sources is required. Direct experience with cereal seed
systems, livestock systems and/or agroecological systems and their
environmental, socio-political and technological contexts will be an
advantage. A working knowledge of and a sustained engagement with
agriculture and development policy issues and processes is essential.
French language skills and experience in francophone West Africa will be
a benefit.

Fellow in Water and Sanitation (Ref: 321)

research on water and sanitation with a particular focus on water and
sanitation governance, uncertainty, science and technology innovation  
and
the politics of the policy process. In association with the STEPS Centre
(www.steps-centre.org <http://www.steps-centre.org>), the new Research  
Fellow will help develop
conceptual and empirical work and a research programme among the
following themes:

• Water scarcity and climate change
• Water security, access and rights to water and sanitation
• Water and sanitation, agriculture, river basins, livelihoods and the
dynamics of disease ecologies, environmental, socioeconomic and
technological change
• Rethinking sustainability and resilience in water and sanitation
• The governance and regulation of water and sanitation systems
• Peri urban areas and pro poor water and sanitation supply
• The politics of policy processes surrounding global water and  
sanitation
debates
• Water- sanitation-agriculture-health interactions
The applicant will have a Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) with a strong
record of original research focusing on the social, cultural and  
political
dimensions of water and sanitation systems, including extended field
experience in Asia, Africa or Latin America. A willingness to work on  
both
water and sanitation issues and their linkages with their environmental,
socio-political, cultural and technological contexts will be desirable.
The post will combine research with teaching and advisory work so post  
graduate
teaching or training experience is essential. The candidate will have
excellent writing and primary research skills and have working knowledge
of and a sustained engagement with global and local development policy /
water and sanitation issues and processes.
Salary: £32,366 to £55,000 per annum, depending on qualifications,
relevant skills and experience
