Rapid Mentor Sourcing

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is
inviting you to sign up as a potential mentor for round two
fellowships. AWARD offers mentors an opportunity to make a big
difference in the careers of African women working in agricultural
research and development. The mentors also benefit as they get to
sharpen their own leadership skills. The AWARD fellowship winners will
be announced in June 2009.

AWARD is encouraging all potential mentors to sign up!

Every AWARD fellow will be matched with a mentor based on expertise,
location and preferences. The AWARD approach to mentoring is specially
designed for busy people who must continue to meet their current
obligations. The design ensures mutual benefit for both fellows and
mentors.

Women and men are warmly invited to serve. Please note that mentoring
costs will be covered by AWARD.

AWARD is looking for mentors who offer:

* one hour of their valuable time per month,

* five days of their valuable time to participate in the
Mentoring Orientation Workshop, along with selected fellow,

* a good reputation in his/her field of expertise,

* strong interpersonal skills and positive attitude,

* commitment to nurture the next generation of scientists,

* willingness to share ideas, strategies, networks and good
examples,

* sensitivity to special issues women may face in the
workplace, and

* willingness to learn new things and to sharpen his/her own
skills via participation in AWARD.

What are the benefits of serving as an AWARD Mentor?

* expanded network of colleagues in African agricultural R&D,

* exposure to new ideas and methods brought by fellows working
in your field of expertise,

* training course of choice (leadership, science writing,
research proposal writing),

* deepened understanding of gender issues in agricultural R&D,

* opportunity to develop and practice a more personal
leadership style,

* enhanced skills in mentoring, listening and role modelling
through participation in AWARD activities,

* additional recognition and respect by colleagues and
leadership, and

* personal satisfaction of directly contributing to the
development of Africa's talent pool in agricultural R&D.
