Description:
The Senior Gender and Agriculture Specialist will undertake policy
relevant research and program work related to gender and agriculture.
In collaboration with the Director of the Economic Development team s/
he will take the lead in shaping and developing ICRW’s portfolio on
gender, agriculture and rural development, building on current work
that focuses on gender in value chain analysis, commercial and high
value agriculture and food security and nutrition for low-income
people in developing countries.
S/he will serve as a senior member of the Economic Development team
and contribute to developing new ideas for analytic and program work
and fundraising on the key thematic area of gender and agriculture and
its integration with the team’s broader portfolio of work on land and
assets, financial services and enterprise development. S/he will
represent ICRW in various public for including technical conferences,
media briefings and congressional testimony. S/he will supervise and
mentor designated staff as needed.
Primary Duties:
* Develop a portfolio of policy and program relevant analytic work on
emerging issues in gender, agriculture and rural development. This
includes identifying key and emerging issues, undertaking literature
reviews, analyzing primary and secondary data; drafting sharp and
comprehensive syntheses based on data analysis; and writing high
quality reports and other outputs
* Undertake core technical and program support activities including:
Strategic and technical assistance to donors and partners on
integrating gender into agricultural programs, including proposal
review, input on grantee or partner selection, and proposal or RFP co-
development with partners, donors and grantees.
Technical support to implement agricultural projects in developing
countries that effectively integrate women and benefit them as
participants in the agricultural and rural economy.
* Represent ICRW externally in its work on gender and agriculture,
including with donors, partners, and in conferences, events, and
networks.
* Work with Director, Economic Development, and Vice President, Social
and Economic Development to strengthen and expand ICRW’s Gender and
Agriculture portfolio, including:
Conceptualizing new areas of analytic and programmatic work.
Expanding networks and cultivating potential donors.
Raising ICRW’s visibility through publications in agricultural and
development journals.
Developing proposals and raising funds.
Required Education, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Sciences, Anthropology,
Rural Sociology, or related discipline. M.A. with additional
experience acceptable.
Seven (7) or more years of post PhD experience, or ten or more years
post Masters Experience, working on gender as it relates to
agriculture, poverty and rural development issues. Significant
experience with project management and donor/partner relations is
essential; experience with corporate sector a plus.
Committed to building an innovative portfolio of analytic and program
work that advances knowledge and program effectiveness in gender,
agriculture and rural and economic development.
Extensive knowledge in gender and agriculture, including demonstrated
expertise in conducting gender analysis, gender assessments, and/or
gender-focused research of agricultural issues, including farming
systems dynamics, access to productive resources and services,
marketing, crop productivity, innovation, or impact of new technologies.
Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills.
Strategic thinking and negotiation skills to help shape a strong
agenda for moving forward ICRW's and partners' work on gender and
agriculture.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills and demonstrated
track record of producing high quality, well-written deliverables in a
timely fashion.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and
effectively manage projects, including staffing, workplans,
deliverables, timelines, and budgets.
Must be a team player and have proven ability to work collaboratively
with professionals at different levels, including colleagues, partners
and donors.
Experience working and living in a developing country, especially sub-
Saharan Africa and South Asia, highly desirable.
Fluency or reading proficiency in Spanish, French or other foreign
language a plus.
