I. Quick Guide: Gender and Food Security
===============================
How can gendered inequalities in food security be eliminated, both in
local food production and availability, and in national and global
policy processes? The following resources are from a selection which
have been summarised and included in the Siyanda database:

- Gender and Food Security: Inequalities in Relation to Hunger (in
French), Genre en Action, July 2008
Why have women been so involved in food riots across Africa, what are
the underlying causes behind their motivation to protest on the
streets, and how should policy-makers respond to what they are saying?
http://www.siyanda.org/static/direnberger_hunger.htm?em=0808&tag=QG

- Website: Gender and Food Security (in Arabic, English, French, and
Spanish), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
This website provides gender information on nine key aspects of food
security - agriculture, the environment, forestry, fisheries, rural
economies, population, nutrition, education and the gender division of
labour.
http://www.siyanda.org/static/fao_gender_website.htm?em=0808&tag=QG

- Women and Food Crises: How US Food Aid Policies Can Better Support
their Struggles. A Discussion Paper, ActionAid USA, January 2008
Women are often at the centre of food crises and are
disproportionately affected by hunger, yet their important role in
providing solutions is often overlooked. This paper calls for
comprehensive programmes designed to support women's crucial
contributions to agricultural production.

- Biopolitics, Climate Change and Water Security: Impact Vulnerability
and Adaptation Issues for Women, Networked Intelligence, January 2007
This article, which examines how climate change will impact on water
security, argues that it is critical for women to have the necessary
information, tools and resources to plan and take decisions around
water security.

- EPAs, An Assault on Africa's Food Sovereignty: Why a Gender and
Women's Rights Analysis is Important for Africa, ACORD International,
January 2007
Women in Sub-Saharan Africa have been most affected by international
free trade agreements that reduce tariffs for importing countries, but
not usually found in decision and policy making platforms that guide
the food sovereignty agenda of their countries.
http://www.siyanda.org/static/accord_epas.htm?em=0808&tag=QG

- Women and Food Security in South Asia, The United Nations University
- World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER),
December 2006
This report explores why despite improvements in food security in
South Asia over the last few decades, nutritional outcomes, especially
those related to women and children, have failed to keep pace.

- Building on Gender, Agrobiodiversity and Local Knowledge - a
Training Manual, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nation (FAO), January 2005
What are the linkages between local knowledge systems, gender roles
and relationships, the conservation and management of
agrobiodiversity, plant and animal genetic resources, and food
security? This training manual aims to promote a holistic
understanding of these components.
